Getting Your Real Estate License in Virginia

The diverse real estate market in Virginia has rural farms, coastal homes and high rise condominiums outside of Washington, D.C.  Candidates interested in getting their real estate license in Virginia must pass a real estate exam.

1. Preparing for the Real Estate Exam in Virginia

Age requirements: Must be at least 18 years old.

Pre-licensing educational requirements: Having successfully completed 60 hours of approved real estate courses for getting a real estate salesperson license in Virginia. Having successfully completed 180 hours of approved real estate courses for getting a real estate broker license in Virginia.

Fee: The Examination Fee is $60 for either a salesperson applicant or a broker applicant. The fee for getting a real estate salesperson license is $170.00, and for getting a real estate broker license is $210.00.

2. Taking the Real Estate Exam in Virginia

Applicants must apply to the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation in Virginia. Call them at (804) 367-8526, or visit their website, www.dpor.virginia.gov.

Wait for the examination information from PSI, a company that handles the Virginia Real Estate Exam. Real Estate salesperson applicants need to provide a proof of having successfully completed 60 hours of approved real estate courses whereas real estate broker applicants need to a provide proof of having successfully completed 180 hours of approved real estate courses.

Take the Real Estate exam at an appointed date and place. Applicants will need to obtain passing grades on two categories: a national real estate test and a Virginia test.

3. Obtaining the Real Estate License in Virginia

After passing the exam applicants must submit their application to the Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation in Virginia to obtain their real estate license. Processing of the application can take up to 2 to 3 weeks.
